You weren’t paying attention and put way to much air in your tires. Maybe you misread how much you were supposed to include. Now what? Driving on overinflated tires can cause a serious safety risk to you and your passengers. This is due in large part to the increased blowout chance from the excess pressure on the tire. Here’s a quick explanation brought to you by Boulder Tire in Boulder, CO, on what will happen if you overinflate your tires and how you can remedy the issue!
Also, having overinflated tires makes them more susceptible to damage from road hazards such as potholes, cracks, curbs, and other junk in the road. The tire is more stiff and rigid than normal so they can’t flex around obstacles as they usually would.
So you've noticed that your tire is overinflated? Just follow these quick steps to fix the problem and get back on the road:
1. Go to the tire that is overinflated and locate your valve stem. It looks like a small black cap extending from the wheel. Twist the cap off to the left to expose the metal pin inside.
2. Check your pressure with a tire air pressure gauge and take note. This should give you an idea of were you will need to adjust to.
3. Using the back end of the air gauge push the metal pin in the center of the valve stem down to release some of the air in the tire. You should do this in bursts and check the remaining pressure regularly.
4. Once you have it within factory specifications screw the cap back on the valve stem and you’re good to go!
Remember that tire pressure varies with temperature and daily use. So check yours often to avoid all the issues listed above.
