Tips for Taking Care of an Automatic Transmission Car

posted on
A majority of vehicles in the United States use an automatic transmission system. If your car only has options for Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and other options, it's an automatic vehicle. This stands out from a standard (or manual) vehicle that uses a stick shift and a clutch pedal.Tips for Taking Care of an Automatic Transmission Car

Why Automatic Transmissions Are Better Than Manual

One of the main reasons most Americans choose an automatic transmission vehicle is for the ease of learning. Driving a car is already a daunting task, and new drivers can have trouble learning how to use a clutch and stick shift. Another benefit of automatic transmissions is their performance when driving uphill. They don't roll back, and they don't stall.

How To Keep Your Automatic Transmission Protected

  • Never shift into reverse from the drive (or vice-versa) if your vehicle hasn't stopped moving. You'll be using your transmission gears to stop your vehicle, leading to damage that is expensive to repair. Use your brakes before switching gears; otherwise, you'll be picking up a heavy repair bill.
  • Never switch your gears into Park if the vehicle is still rolling. Newer models of cars prevent you from doing this to protect your transmission system.
  • Don't switch your vehicle into neutral when the car moves since it can prevent you from taking control when needed. Another reason never to stay neutral when driving downhill or coasting is that your engine and oil pump slow down in this gear and might overheat while your vehicle is moving.
  • Never put your vehicle in neutral at stoplights. Keeping your vehicle in neutral can lead to you accidentally revving your car when not in gear, leading to problems down the road. If you're in neutral and an emergency collision might happen, you won't have time to respond and get out of the way.
  • Never rev your vehicle while in neutral and shift to drive while accelerating. This will damage the bands, clutches, and gears in your transmission box. You'll eventually need to replace parts of your transmission, which is terrible.
  • Avoid driving while the gas-tank is low since fuel offers lubrication to several moving parts. Driving a vehicle with low fuel pressure routinely will lead to wearing out of these parts.
  • Never let water seep into the transmission. Don't attempt to drive through roads that are underwater, and if possible, move your vehicle to higher ground to avoid flooding.

Signs That You Need Transmission Repair, Replacement, or Rebuilding

If you're experiencing any of these signs with your automatic transmission, then you might want to take it to your nearest service store.
  • Computer diagnostics picks up an issue with your transmission system.
  • Your vehicle has trouble changing gears.
  • Your car makes noises when in neutral.
  • Slipping gears.
  • Dragging clutch.
  • Leaking fluid from the transmission system.
  • Check Engine Light is On.
