What they do:
Having a good understanding of how the components work can help to understand the methods of repairs used.
The heating system keeps your vehicle cabin warm in the winter. The air conditioning system performs a dual function of activating when you use your defroster in the winter (to dry the air) and keeping you cool in the summer.
Heating systems are composed of a heater core that acts like a small radiator located behind the dash. When you turn on the heat it opens a valve that allows the hot coolant from the engine to go into the heater core. When you turn on the heater fan it blows air over the heated core and is warmed. The warmed air is directed to the mode you choose; defrost, cabin or bi-level.
Air conditioning systems do not create cold air. They actually take the heat and moisture out of the air that is already in your car, leaving behind cooler air. The gas used to accomplish this is generically called refrigerant or R-134 in vehicles produced since 1994. The air conditioning system is totally sealed to contain the refrigerant so it can’t escape even under high pressure.
The compressor compresses the refrigerant into a high-pressure state causing it to liquefy. The refrigerant travels through the high-pressure lines to the condenser, which is similar to a small radiator. As the fresh air on the outside of the vehicle blows over the fins of the condenser it absorbs the heat from the liquefied refrigerant flowing through it. Then it flows into the expansion valve where it’s restricted and becomes gaseous. The gaseous refrigerant then travels through the evaporator, which is usually located in the passenger compartment of the dash. The refrigerant in its gaseous state is now able to absorb heat from the air passing through the evaporator fins, leaving behind the cooler air. The blower fan blows this cooler dry air into the car’s cabin. The refrigerant travels back to the compressor where it’s compressed back into the high-pressure gas and the process repeats again.
Boulder, CO Car Air Conditioning Repair Service
Why service is essential: Heating and A/C systems could wear out gradually with usage, hoses and pipes can become obstructed or leak if not serviced, leading to inadequate performance or a lack of cooling capabilities. Maintenance will keep your vehicle comfortable for you and your passengers.
The best ways to know if your heating and A/C are in need of service:
If your air conditioning blows just a little cooler than the air outside
Air that blows in smells moist, or like mildew
Your cabin does not warm up in winter, or is just somewhat warmer than outside
The defroster takes longer compared to normal to operate, blows in dirty air, or doesn't blow at all
Your heating unit or A/C only operates when driving, not when idling
Your heater blows cool air, or the A/C blows warm
Your vents don't push out much air, even on high
A comprehensive assessment of heating and a/c systems includes:
Checking the interior and blower
Inspecting radiator coolant level, hose pipes, pressure cap and thermostat
Examining the compressor belt
Checking for leaks or damage
A cooling system pressure examination
